Window casing is one of the details that makes a room feel finished rather than merely trimmed out. Knowing how to specify window casing means looking beyond a catalog profile and defining the proportions, wood species, construction details, and installation conditions that will make the finished work look intentional.
For a custom home or renovation, the right casing should connect the window to the architecture of the room. It needs to sit comfortably beside baseboard, crown, doors, wall paneling, and built-ins. A beautiful profile can still look out of place if it is too narrow for the ceiling height, too ornate for the home’s style, or too thick for a shallow wall return.
Start With the Window and the Wall
A complete casing specification begins with the existing or planned window condition. Measure the finished window opening, not just the rough framing. Confirm whether the window has a factory jamb, a wood jamb, drywall returns, or jamb extensions that bring the window flush with the finished wall surface.
The casing itself covers the joint between the window jamb and wall finish. Before choosing a profile, determine the reveal: the narrow strip of jamb intentionally left visible between the window opening and the casing. A consistent reveal is a sign of careful finish work. For many traditional wood-trim applications, a reveal around 3/16 inch to 1/4 inch is common, but the best choice depends on the profile and the scale of the room.
Wall conditions matter just as much. Uneven plaster, thick tile surrounds, shiplap, stone accents, and deep window wells can all change how casing must be built. A specification should identify whether the trim is installed on flat drywall, against paneling, or beside another finish material. This gives the millwork and installation teams the information needed to plan clean transitions.
Set the Casing Width and Thickness
Casing width establishes visual weight. In a room with 8-foot ceilings and simple baseboard, a 2 1/4-inch to 3 1/2-inch casing may feel balanced. Taller rooms, larger windows, historic homes, and more formal interiors often call for 4-inch, 5-inch, or wider assemblies.
There is no single correct width. The goal is proportion. A narrow casing around an expansive bank of windows can disappear, while an oversized casing around a small bath window can feel crowded. Compare the casing width to the baseboard and door trim. As a general design relationship, window and door casing often share a family of profiles and widths, while baseboard is usually wider and carries more visual weight at the floor.
Thickness is equally important. Standard stock casing may be 11/16 inch or 3/4 inch thick, but custom solid wood trim can be milled thicker to create stronger shadow lines and a more substantial result. Thicker material is especially effective in homes with deep baseboards, substantial crown moulding, or architectural paneling. It can also help accommodate imperfect wall conditions, though thickness alone will not solve a poorly planned jamb depth.
Choose a Profile That Matches the Architecture
The profile should support the home’s character without competing with it. Contemporary spaces often benefit from clean, square-edged casing or a simple eased edge. Transitional interiors can use restrained stepped profiles with enough detail to create depth but not so much that they read as formal ornament.
Craftsman-style homes typically call for flat stock, simple backbands, or built-up trim with strong horizontal lines. Traditional homes may use shaped casings, backband mouldings, and more detailed headers. In a historic renovation, matching an existing profile may be more important than selecting a standard pattern that is merely similar.
A built-up casing assembly offers more flexibility than a single-piece profile. It might combine a flat casing board with a backband, bead, or decorative cap. This approach can create a larger, more architectural look while allowing each component to be scaled to the room. It also makes it easier to coordinate window trim with door openings, fireplaces, and wall paneling.

Specify the Header, Sill, and Apron Separately
Not every window casing is a simple rectangle. The head casing, side casings, interior stool, and apron each contribute to the final appearance and should be called out individually when they are part of the design.
A header can match the side casing, or it can be built wider and more detailed to give the window a stronger focal point. In traditional rooms, the header may include a cap or backband that projects beyond the side casings. In Craftsman-style work, it may be a simple flat board with pronounced square extensions, sometimes called horns.
The stool is the interior horizontal shelf at the bottom of a double-hung or similar window. It projects into the room and should be sized for the wall depth, casing thickness, and intended use. A shallow stool may be appropriate for a clean contemporary look, while a deeper solid wood stool creates a more substantial traditional detail. The apron sits below the stool and can match the casing, baseboard, or another trim element in the room.
For windows that extend close to a countertop, tub deck, built-in bench, or floor, a conventional stool and apron may not fit. State these constraints early. The best detail may be a square casing terminating into the adjacent surface, a tiled return, or a custom jamb treatment instead.
Select the Right Wood and Finish Strategy
Material selection should reflect both appearance and performance. Clear hardwoods such as white oak, maple, walnut, and cherry are often selected for stain-grade interiors where grain and color are part of the design. Poplar is a reliable choice for painted trim because it machines cleanly and provides a smooth painted finish. Pine can offer warmth and character, particularly in rustic or traditional settings, but its knots and grain should be considered before specifying a clear finish.
Specify whether the casing is paint-grade or stain-grade from the beginning. Stain-grade work requires careful attention to grain matching, color variation, and the appearance of joints. Paint-grade trim gives more flexibility with species and built-up assemblies, but it still deserves crisp milling, tight joinery, and a smooth surface.
Also identify the finish system. Will the casing be site-painted, prefinished, clear-coated, stained, or left natural for a period of time? Wood moves with seasonal humidity changes, especially in Western North Carolina. Proper acclimation, stable indoor conditions, and a finish applied to all exposed surfaces help protect solid wood trim over time.
Put the Details on a Trim Schedule
The most useful specification is one a builder, finish carpenter, and millwork shop can all read the same way. A trim schedule does not need to be complicated, but it should eliminate assumptions. Include the casing profile name or drawing, face width, thickness, wood species, finish designation, and quantity or opening locations.
For more detailed projects, add the jamb extension depth, reveal dimension, header construction, stool projection, apron size, and corner treatment. State whether corners are mitered, butted, coped, or assembled with decorative corner blocks. Include elevations or marked-up room plans for windows that differ from the typical condition.
A written schedule is especially valuable when a home includes several window types. A standard bedroom window may receive simple casing, while a living room picture window, bay window, or grouped casement unit may need a custom built-up surround. Calling out these differences protects the design and helps prevent last-minute substitutions.
Review the Full Room Before Finalizing
Window casing should never be specified in isolation. Lay samples beside the door casing, baseboard, crown moulding, flooring, wall color, and hardware finishes. View them in the actual room whenever possible. Natural light can change the appearance of both wood grain and profile shadows throughout the day.
This review is where good trim becomes a finished interior with real character. Sometimes the right answer is a simpler profile in a wider board. Other times, a small backband or a deeper header is what gives the room the level of craftsmanship it needs. The best specification is the one that respects the architecture, fits the site conditions, and gives the installer clear direction.
A well-proportioned window surround may seem like a small decision, but it is a detail you will see every day. Take the time to define it carefully, and the finished room will carry the quality of custom millwork in every view.
